Help With Your Unclaimed Pension Search

    • What to do if you cannot find a name?

      • Check your spelling or try another name, such as a maiden name or former married name.
      • If you believe you are entitled to a pension from PBGC, but cannot find your name or company, first make sure that:

PBGC has trusteed your pension plan. To see if we have trusteed your plan, go to Find My Plan. If we have not trusteed the plan, then your name will not appear in our Unclaimed Pensions list.

PBGC trustees only "defined benefit" pension plans sponsored by private-sector companies. "Defined benefit" plans are those plans that promise participants a specific benefit, usually a monthly amount, at retirement. Plans such as profit-sharing or 401(k) plans are not "defined benefit" plans. PBGC does not insure pension plans offered by federal, state, or local government.

Exception: There are two exceptions where names could appear in our Unclaimed Pensions list even if PBGC hasn't trusteed the plan.

        1. Plans covered by the Page Collins or Rettig settlement agreements, or
        2. Plans that end in a standard termination.

Participants in these plans who could not be found by the plan administrator or PBGC are included in the Unclaimed Pensions list. These plans generally will not appear in PBGC's Find My Plan.

    • What to do if you cannot find a company?

      • Check your spelling and try searching again
      • In some cases, the name of the organization that sponsored the pension plan may have changed due to mergers, reorganizations, bankruptcies, etc.
      • Also see PBGC's publication Finding a Lost Pension [PDF].
    • If your name has an asterisk (*) next to it

An asterisk next to a name means that PBGC is uncertain whether the person is owed a benefit from the pension plan, based on the records currently available to PBGC (for example, a plan sponsor may have sent us a name but with a zero benefit). However, we encourage you to contact us for a determination. You may provide additional documentation that may establish a right to a benefit.

    • If your name is on the list or if you think you may be a beneficiary of a person whose name is listed

    • If your name is not on the list

People who believe they may be missing from the records of a terminated defined benefit plan, or are surviving beneficiaries and are not on the Unclaimed Pensions list, should first try to contact the pension plan administrator or the company sponsoring the plan.
